Although South Carolina has experienced a reduction in teen pregnancies, in 1999 nearly 11,000 girls in the state between the ages of 10 and 19 became pregnant, resulting in 8,600 births. South Carolina has the 13th highest teen birth rate in the nation and ranks 40th overall in the National Kid’s Count measure of the well being of children. The South Carolina Youth Risk Behavior Survey finds that 60 percent of male and 56 percent of female high school students in South Carolina have had sexual intercourse and 40 percent of male and 39 percent of female high school students are currently sexually active.
The S.C. Campaign continues to be a primary source in South Carolina for public awareness, education, technical assistance and advocacy for the prevention of unplanned adolescent pregnancies. Turner Foundation awarded the Campaign with general support to increase their program capacity to inform and educate South Carolinians and influence public policy as it relates to teen pregnancy prevention through advocacy, public education, publications, and technical assistance and training to local teen pregnancy prevention programs in all 46 counties. |
