In 1994 the Cairo/International Conference on Population and Development Program of Action for promoting reproductive health, population stabilization and sustainable development was endorsed by 180 nations. Its success depends on full participation of the U.S., Japan and the World Bank, which are collectively to provide more than $3 billion of the total $5.67 billion in support from donor nations and institutions. In 1996, all donor assistance for population and reproductive health programs totaled $2 billion - just over 35 percent of the year 2000 goal. Unfortunately, high cuts in U.S. family planning assistance has further encouraged similar backsliding among the 20 other donor nations, as well as the aid-recipient nations.
Turner Foundation awarded PAI general support for research, policy analysis, advocacy and communications to increase U.S. and international leadership and funding to meet the reproductive health and family planning needs worldwide and ensure ICPD commitments.
