At a length of 137 miles the Altamaha is Georgia’s longest river, and its 14,000 square mile drainage area is the second largest river basin on the Atlantic seaboard. The health of the Altamaha is severely threatened by population growth and industrial pressure. Its headwater tributaries drain much of central Georgia, including an area of southeast Atlanta that has one of the highest growth rates in the country. Coastal Georgia is also experiencing growth, as the urbanization and development that characterize Savannah to the North and Brunswick to the South are beginning to creep along the I-95 corridor in McIntosh County. There are currently more than 100 major permits allowing discharges into the Altamaha.
The Altamaha Riverkeeper’s work involves direct monitoring of the health of the Altamaha River and Basin, including systematic reviewing of national Pollution Discharge Elimination System permits, and regular outreach to raise public awareness of threats to the River’s ecosystem.
