The Lowcountry of South Carolina, which encompasses nearly 3 million acres of habitat, is under intense pressure from residential and commercial development. In 1999, approximately 100,000 acres of prime forest, farmland and wildlife habitat were lost to development in South Carolina. In contrast, only 10,000 acres were protected through donated conservation easements. In the near future, estimates reflect the urban area of the Lowcountry to increase by 225 percent, population by 40 percent and habitat loss to 20,000 acres per year. Because much of the Lowcountry is still in the hands of private landowners, conservation easements are a critical mechanism for protection.
Turner Foundation awarded the Lowcountry Open Land Trust a general support grant to increase the permanent protection of South Carolina’s coastal lands by conservation easements. The Lowcountry Open Land Trust is working to educate landowners, advance regional conservation efforts by partnering with other environmental groups and provide technical expertise in GIS capabilities, membership development and grant writing to other land trusts, municipalities and environmental and historic preservation groups. The Lowcountry Open Land Trust has protected close to 23,000 acres to date in the region.
